The consequences of being off-campus are the loss of cellular and wireless coverage. Being aware of these impacts and understanding what preemptive steps to take will allow you to work and access Carleton resources with ease. In the following sections, information for Duo access is categorized by status of whether or not you have access to a phone or similar device.

If you have any questions on the following information, or are completely unable to access Duo even after the following steps, please call the ITS HelpDesk at 507-222-5999 or send an email to: helpdesk@carleton.edu

Duo Access while Abroad/Traveling

Duo has the ability to function even if there is no internet and cellular data available, making it usable when traveling. Rather than a traditional push notification you will need to enter a passcode from the Duo Mobile App. See below for an illustrative guide.

Using a Phone

  1. If you are able to access internet/cellular data, a traditional push notification should appear.
  2. In the scenario where internet/cellular data is unavailable, you will need to obtain a code from the Duo Mobile App

How to Obtain a Passcode for Duo

The following example is how to enter a passcode by using the Duo Mobile App. The other authentication devices act in a similar manner but do not require the you to open the Duo app.

    1. If you have logged in to a web location that requires two factor authentication, you should see a menu that looks like or is similar to the following:

    2. Select the option, "Enter a Passcode", and it will give you this updated screen:

    3. With your mobile phone or tablet, open your Duo app

    4. When presented with this screen, selected the down arrow next to Carleton College

    5. Duo will then present you with a 6 digit code which can then be entered on the original screen. Note: You do NOT need to enter spaces for the code, enter the numbers only.

    6. You should now be successfully logged in!
  3. Use one of your backup codes if you have any

  4. If the above methods do not work, call the ITS Helpdesk at 507-222-5999. We will need to do a video call to verify your identity and following this will provide you with bypass codes.

Using a Duo Fob

  1. If you have a Duo Fob press the button on the device to send you a code
  2. Enter the code in the 'Passcode' section of Duo
