The consequences of being off-campus are the loss of cellular and wireless coverage. Being aware of these impacts and understanding what preemptive steps to take will allow you to work and access Carleton resources with ease. In the following sections, information for Duo access is categorized by status of whether or not you have access to a phone or similar device.

Planning to Bring a Configured Phone/Tablet

  1. Obtain and store backup codes. Instructions can be found here.
  2. Make sure you have downloaded the Duo Mobile app.
    1. Download Link for Apple Devices
    2. Download Link for Android Devices
    3. Download Link for Windows Phones
  3. Enable "Remember me for 60 Days" if given the option.
  4. You are all set! Make sure to read below "Duo Access while Abroad/Traveling" to learn how to use Duo abroad.

Don't Have a Configured Phone

  1. If you have the option to bring a phone, configure it using these instructions. And then follow the steps for "Planning to Bring a Configured Phone/Tablet".
  2. In the case step 1 isn't an option, you will need to obtain a Duo key fob that will provide you with regenerative one time use codes with a click of a button. If you have one already, skip to step 3.
    1. If it is currently >1 week before your departure from Carleton, due either of the following:
      1. Call the ITS Helpdesk at 507-222-5999
      2. Email the ITS Helpdesk at helpdesk@carleton.edu and provide in the email your planned date of departure
    2. If it is <1 week before your departure from Carleton, call the ITS Helpdesk ASAP at 507-222-5999 for further instruction.
  3. Enable "Remember me for 60 Days" if given the option.
  4. You are all set! Make sure to read below "Duo Access while Abroad/Traveling" to learn how to use Duo abroad.

Duo has the ability to function even if there is no internet and cellular data available, making it usable when traveling. Rather than a traditional push notification you will need to enter a passcode from the Duo Mobile App. See below for an illustrative guide.
